The History of Nu Phi Chapter
“The Chapter of Choice SINCE 1926!”
The World War ended in 1918 and GI’s were coming home from fighting in all corners of the world. However, Black GI’s were not coming home to the parades and celebrations of their comrades; rather they were coming home to an America in which the national lynching rate approached 100 per year. Violent acts against blacks and mob dominated trials continued into the 1920’s when Klan violence reached its pinnacle, forcing white politicians everywhere to denounce Klan activities or appear to endorse them. In Texas, the Ku Klux Klan even put forth and endorsed candidates for various political offices. In the 1924 run-off race for the Governor’s office, Klan candidate Felix Robertson of Dallas was only narrowly defeated by Democrat Miriam Ferguson – finally eradicating organization based Klan politics in Texas, but not Jim Crow. The 1920’ may have been roaring for White America, but they were the Tumultuous Twenties for Black America.
