ONPEC

In January 1994, under the leadership of Brothers James Thomas, William (Dannie) Harwell, Bennie Rucker, and Al Harley, the Omega Nu Phi Educational Center (ONPEC) was established.  ONPEC received its 501(c3) classification and began to operate as a non-profit organization with the sole purpose of establishing a means to continue to provide community services and to offer its patrons the state, local and federal tax exemptions and benefits which they are entitled.

In 1996, under the leadership of Brother Warren Moody, Nu Phi began the process of preparing for the New Millennium by inspiring younger brothers to assume an active role in the operation of the chapter.  He was instrumental in having the seasoned brothers and the younger brothers joining forces to work for the good of the chapter, and from his effort a new generation of brothers accepted the challenge.

Brothers Ramon Simon and Joel Richards introduced Nu Phi to “high technology”.  With the evolution of the Internet, website, and email, Nu Phi went on-line and began to utilize the “new technology” for executing chapter business.  Brother BK Watson embarked on a mission to uplift the chapter spiritually, leading by being humble, teaching us to love and forgive our neighbor and providing homilies at each chapter meeting. These young bridge builders of Nu Phi were instrumental in reorganizing the chapter retreats, reinstating the youth mentor programs, spear-heading the food and clothing drive for the needy, adopting a family program and securing young talents for the Talent Hunt program.

The mainstay of Nu Phi is its Go Western Dance.  The dance, established during Brother Fletcher Morgan’s administration in 1961, is held on the third Saturday of February.  The proceeds generated from this affair are used to provide scholarships and to support the numerous community programs that the chapter conducts and sponsors.

Since the birth of Nu Phi Chapter, it has been an active and expanding chapter.  A number of loyal men have been accepted (initiated) into the chapter, and have transferred from other chapters.  Thus, it is totally impossible to state the number of brothers who have been affiliated with this grand old chapter since its origin.  Several brothers of Nu Phi have served as District Representative of the Ninth District: H.P. Carter, Fletcher Morgan, Samuel Prince and Shelly Stewart.

Today, Nu Phi is in a transitional period with the changing of the guards and the changing of time, currently Brother Bernard R. Clayton, Jr. serves as the Ninth District’s Keeper of Records and Seal.  Nu Phi is still a strong chapter and thriving with a constant roll call of 40 to 60 active brothers.  Nu Phi was, Nu Phi is, Ni Phi will always be “The Chapter of Choice”.

This revision incorporates inputs submitted by M. Sheppard Sr., Warren Moody, Joel Richards, Henry Emanuel and Raymond Bourgeois (04/15/01) and William Dannie Harwell (01/14/2010) is dedicated to the memory of the late Omega Men of Nu Phi Chapter who were …
